Seeking out the best pizza in Savannah GA
Savannah, Georgia, with its charming streets and vibrant culture, is not just a city rich in history and architecture but also a hub for culinary delights. Among its diverse culinary offerings, pizza stands out as a beloved choice for locals and visitors alike. We must admit, moving down to Savannah years ago from the pizza capitals of the world, New Haven, CT and NYC, it took us a while to settle in and find our favorite pies. While there isn’t anything quite like a Northeast slice, we have definitely found some tasty favorites whether it be for delivery or dine in. If you are dreaming of a Wooster Street or Grimaldi’s style pie you simply aren’t going to find it. That said… There are still some really great pizzas to be enjoyed. Certainly there are even more great pizza restaurants than we feature here, and we’ll explore more in the future. However, these are currently some of our go to favorites.
•Vinnie Van Go-Go's: Located in the heart of Savannah's Historic District by Congress Street in City Market, Vinnie Van Go-Go's is a local institution renowned for its delicious and generously sized slices. With a casual atmosphere and friendly staff, this pizzeria offers a variety of toppings to customize your pizza just the way you like it. These pizzas are filling, and the large is… LARGE! The crust is thick, but not too thick. They load it up with plenty of cheese and toppings so you’ll feel the weight of this pie. We often order takeout out and have enough to eat for a couple of days. Definitely a savory slice!
•Screamin' Mimi's Pizza: Nestled in the North Historic District, Screamin' Mimi's Pizza is a hidden gem but certainly well known amongst those in the know. The box proclaims its Jersey Style Pizza. Friends turned us on to Mimi’s and it’s one of our go to favorites for delivery. They don’t arrive over cooked, so if you like it well done then ask for it. Once again, the large is JUMBO just as their menu states. The crust is thin, which we like, but not too thin. They have plenty of specialty options if you want to get wild, but we usually keep it simple. Bingo on the sauce!
Hop Atomica: If you are seeking a wonderful experience that is just a skip and a jump from Downtown then Hop Atomica is a must. Tasty wood-fired pizza, complimented exceptional craft beers and co*cktails. Cool vibes with both indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s dog friendly. These pies aren’t jumbo per say, but their gourmet flair take it over the top. Fresh locally sourced ingredients, and made from scratch. Thin crust, yes New Haven thin, and with serious flavor. This is one of our go to favorites when we want to go out for pizza, and and experience the good life here in Savannah.
Vittoria Pizzeria: For an authentic taste of Italy in Savannah, look no further than Vittoria Pizzeria. Located at Starland Yard in the Victorian Starland District, this cozy eatery is a cross between Neapolitan and Hearth baked style pizza that is baked to perfection in a wood-fired oven. The Char spots on the crust add to the flavor, and the sauce is really wonderful as well. The pizzas are 11” so just the right size for one if you're really hungry, or maybe two people if you are willing to share. Although charred, the crust is chewy vs. brittle. From the simplicity of the Margherita pizza to the indulgence several designer delights, each pie showcases the skill and passion of the pizzaiolos behind the counter. Starland Yard is highly sociable, often has live music, and offers an open air atmosphere. An escape from downtown, and a definite must for anyone visiting Savannah.
